2002 DYC Fun Cruise
The 2002 Fun Cruise to Detroit Yacht Club took place under warm
and blustery conditions. Winds out of the southwest ranged from
the high teens to the mid-twenties with a few periods where the
winds blew in excess of 30 knots! The long beat to DYC across the
chop of Lake St. Clair made for some interesting choices of course
to the head of the Detroit River, with boats taking advantage of
some huge oscillations (upwards of 30 degree shifts in the wind
between 220 and 250) to get to the right (and thus inshore) side
of the course making out well in the relatively calmer waters off
the Grosse Pointes. A few boats ran into some problems along the
way: Sasparilla broke a spreader and Surprise blew up their veteran
#3.
The 'Fun Committee' for the race, led by Bill Jenkins, produced
sailing instructions with numerous admonitions to have fun, and
to avoid hitting land. (add more here)
