North Star's club boat program is up and running in its third year and because of increased needs of our instructional programs we have purchased another Flying Scot. The goals of this boat program are to acquire and maintain a fleet of sailboats for club members, adult sailing programs and North Star Jr. Sailing to use. Having a fleet of boats will attract new members who have an interest in sailing but do not have the opportunity or have the desire to own a sailboat. Some owners of larger boats may like to have the opportunity to sail another night during the week but on a less complicated boat. It would give sailors coming out of our Jr. Program an opportunity to keep sailing with North Star and participate in our various sailing programs. The club boat program may also be the seed for forming a one design fleet.
North Star has purchased two Flying Scots and Jr. Sailing is allowing us to use their 17 ft. Mark sailboat. Both boats are very stable sailboats with large open cockpits. They make a great learning platforms and the Flying Scot is a proven one design sailboat with local and national regattas.
To sail one of the boats a skipper must be a member of North Star, (This is where we pick up new members) and have a valid skipper's card. An Application for a Skipper's Card is at the club or on the Members Only Page of the website. The cost of the skipper's card is just $25.00 and it gives you the ability to reserve a boat any time they are not being used by our instructional classes. Once the application is submitted and approved, you will be given a web site to go to reserve your time on the water. The skipper's card gives you unlimited usage and the boats will be available for reservation up to three weeks in advance. This program is open to all levels of memberships and at these rates anyone can make it out on the water.
This boat program is new and with the support of our members I hope it can grow to become one of the great assets of North Star. As soon as interested skippers sign up, we will be forming a committee which will report to the Fleet Captain. Any questions please contact me by phone, email or check out the How to Use a Flying Scot Page.
